I know next to nothing about the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the city of Darmstadt. I never heard of this place but decided to go anyway because it was not far from Frankfurt where I was staying at the time. I thought that I should see the site and maybe the rest of the city while I was at it. From my understanding, as the name implies, artists would come here to live and work on works of art. These artists would have sponsors who would support their work. This resulted in the production of numerous works of art here. This happened in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century which also happened to be when art nouveau was all the rage. Jugendstil is their answer to this and you can see this style in their works here.
It seems that parts of the park is under construction. What I believe is the exhibition hall was fenced off and not open to visitors. This actually stopped me when I first arrived here because the construction makes it look like the place isn’t very welcoming. In my mind, I was imagining the artists live here and the construction made it look like a rather dodgy place to be in. The exhibition hall seems to be one of the larger structures and with it out of commission, I was wondering what else would I be able to see here.
