I spend some time walking around the Zeil Shopping District but ultimately didn’t buy anything. I will probably be back again to buy some stuff for the trip home but for now, I am done with modern day shopping. By the time I was done, it was already past noon and it was time for lunch. I didn’t find any interesting places to see at Zeil or perhaps that is because I already had something in mind when I came here. I saw this place in the old town and I thought that it should give it a try.
Haus Wertheym looks like a very old tavern. The sign above the front door says 1479 which I take to mean that they have been around since 1479. This would make it the oldest restaurant I have been to. I don’t think that this was the original structure since the city was destroyed in the war however, the interiors were all meticulously restored and it is very attractive inside. I am not sure if this is a touristy place but there seemed to be a lot of people eating here. I was seated at a large table with other customers. They didn’t really mind me and I didn’t mind them anyway.
I got myself a plate of pork schnitzel and glass of apfelwein which is apple wine a local specialty. The pork schnitzel is nice enough. It also comes with another local specialty known as Grüne Soße which means green sauce. I know this is easy enough to make but it is better if someone else makes it for you. I like this because it is affordable and won’t be too heavy which means that I should be able to have snacks and a heavier dinner tonight. I tended to skip my lunches here because it is too expensive to be eating out all the time for both lunch and dinner. I would skip my lunch or at least have a light meal and have a heavier one for dinner.
