Much as I enjoyed the old town of Frankfurt, it was a bit too busy there. I know that there is the Christmas market there but even this early in the day, there were already a lot of people there. I know I will be visiting again in the evening and I know that it will be even worse. Fortunately, the old town of Frankfurt has a lot of interesting places to see. I was randomly walking around the old town and I noticed that there was a tall tower. It was red and it looked a lot like a church tower. I thought that the tower was very attractive and I thought to go a little closer.
The tower belongs to the Frankfurt Cathedral. It is a short distance away from the old town square but there was no way for it to fit there. Looking at the scale of the cathedral, it would probably not surprise you that this has close ties to the monarchy. There are coronations held here and it even holds the title of Imperial Cathedral just to emphasize who owns it. As a result, Frankfurt Cathedral was never considered a “true” cathedral as it was never the seat of the bishop. It surprised me to know that the church isn’t even owned by the Catholic Church. It is actually owned by the city of Frankfurt but the building is used by the Catholic Church.
