I was walking around the historic old town of Frankfurt and I was impressed by the number of buildings that were restored. Frankfurt was flattened during the second world war. So even if these buildings here look old, a lot of them are just reconstructions. But it looks like they did a very good job at it. Any old town will have a town square and Frankfurt’s old town is no different. There is a town square here in Frankfurst and it is named Römerberg which means Roman mountain. I am not sure why it would be called Roman mountain when the area is very flat. Perhaps there are a lot of old Roman structures here that the name stuck even if the current ones are obviously not Roman.

The square itself isn’t massive by any means, but it is packed with activity. There is a huge Christmas market set up here and I was surprised to see that it was already open. The Christmas markets in the other cities I have been to weren’t open this early in the morning but it seems that Frankfurt is not like them. This early, there were a lot of people milling about. I was actually on the lookout for something to eat here. At the same time I was admiring the reconstructed medieval buildings since they look very attractive. It is in places like these that you would feel that you are truly in Germany.
