I was surprised to know that there is another structure here at the Lorsch Abbey grounds. I just seen the abbey gatehouse and I thought that it was impressive and even more incredible that it is still standing after all these years. This is made even more significant by the fact that the rest of the abbey is actually in ruins. However, that is not very accurate. It seems that there is still another structure here in the abbey grounds which I have yet to visit. Walking straight from the gatehouse, you will see a church on top of the hill. I believe this is the church associated with the abbey.
I don’t know how much of this church is a reconstruction but it looks to be quite old as well. It has large buttresses on the front and side of the church. The facade of the church is mostly exposed brick. And unfortunately, it doesn’t have any of the designs which the gatehouse has. I would imagine that it used to be lavishly decorated before too. This leads me to think that this would be a reconstruction, or at the very least, built on top of whatever was left. It is a shame since Lorsch was one of the richest and most powerful of abbeys in Europe. There was even a time when it was practically independent and only answerable to the emperor.
