When I found out that Speyer is the site of two UNESCO World Heritage sites, I was sort of relieved because I knew that I might not need to travel to three different places today. There are three separate UNESCO sites in the area but I would have needed to travel a bit to get to those places. By having two at Speyer, I could potentially drop one of them. The second site here in Speyer is actually a Jewish Court which is filed under the listing ShUM Sites of Speyer, Worms and Mainz. ShUM being the Hebrew acronyms of Speyer, Worms and Mainz all of which hosted large concentrations of Jews.
I wasn’t aware of the Jewish heritage in Germany and I was surprised to know how big it was here. As you might expect, with the building to communities will also come the building of various structures that come with it. In this case, there were synagogues and the aforementioned Jewish Court. Before I actually get to see the court, I would have to go through the museum, which is also the entrance to the court. There is a small entrance fee but you also have access to the museum. The museum isn’t that big at all, but it exhibits some artifacts related to the nearby site. I hope to be able to know more about the culture even if just a little bit.
