Speyer Cathedral is considered to be the largest romanesque cathedral in the world. Because of it’s size, it had an enormous impact on the design of cathedrals in the Rhineland and also in Germany. It is for this reason that it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage site list. I finally decided to step out of the cathedral having gone around it for some time. While I arrived in Speyer a little early in the morning, by the time I stepped out of the cathedral, it was fully morning, and a beautiful one at that.
It was still cold and freezing but at least there was no wind. The ground is covered with a thin layer of snow but it is still manageable. I thought that I was lucky because the lighting here was splendid. The sky was amazingly clear and it contrasted well with the red sandstone that is used to build the cathedral. From the side, you can get a better idea of just how large the cathedral is. It was actually a little difficult to fit the entire cathedral in the frame because it was that big. It also doesn’t help that the bell tower is very tall that it is impossible to include it in the frame without walking all the way back.
