I somehow got bored of the Speyer Cathedral very quickly. I know how important and influential it is as far church design goes in Germany. However, the insides of the cathedral didn’t look anything special. The cathedral is considered to be the largest Romanesque cathedral in the world and the whole place just oozes with romanesque-ness. The round arches which are typical in Romanesque churches are used a lot here while at the same time very effective in imparting a sense of size to the inside of the cathedral.
Unlike gothic cathedrals, the Speyer Cathedral is actually quite bright inside. This allows you to see much of the cathedral. This is in contrast to gothic cathedrals which tend to be dark and you would have to strain your eyes to be able to see the roof. I suspect this might be intentional to give you a deeper sense of size which will happen inf you can’t see the roof. This is more pronounced at night where there it much less light coming in the church. Apart from this, I didn’t think that there was anything particularly outstanding to see here. There was this strange sculpture which might be a candle holder. It was hard to tell because there were only a couple of candles there.
