Undoubtedly, the most important landmark in the city of Speyer is the Speyer Cathedral. I could see the cathedral almost as soon as I entered the city center. The official name of the cathedral is a mouthful – Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St Stephen, because of that, I will just refer to it as the Speyer Cathedral. Looking at the cathedral, you’ll be immediately be impressed by the size of the cathedral. It is considered to be the largest Romanesque in the world. You can tell that this is a Romanesque church by the rose window or oculus that is typical in Romanesque churches. It is because it is considered to be a monument to Romanesque churches in Germany that it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage site list.
It is incredible to think construction was started way back in the eleventh century. Apart from the size, it may not be obvious that it was built that long ago when churches or cathedrals tend to be huge structures. The cathedral looks very well maintained. You won’t be able to tell that it is almost a thousand years old. Of course, like a lot of structures of this age, the Speyer Cathedral has gone through numerous renovations. I looks much younger than it actually is.
