It seems that I was in an important part of the Trier city center. Trier used to be an imperial city and it is also home to one of the electors of the emperor of the Holy Roman empire. Because of this importance, it is no surprise that there are a good number of important buildings here in Trier. This part of the city center has the old basilica which is attached to the Electoral Palace itself. I had no idea at the time but I was actually not that far from the previous Roman bath which I visited, no wonder is was called the Imperial Baths because of its proximity to the Electoral Palace.
Compared to the Konstantinbasilika, the current Electoral Palace structure is relatively recent. There was an older structure here which would be more in line with the timing of the Holy Roman Empire. This also explains the obvious difference in designs of the basilica and the palace. Unsurprisingly, the palace didn’t seem to be open for visits when I was there. I could only take photos from the outside. There was a garden outside as well but this is no Versailles as it is much more modest. There are several statues in the garden but I don’t recognize any of the figures.
