I was back in the city center of Trier exploring the Roman monuments here. In particular, the Konstantinbasilika which is a basilica from the time of Emperor Constantine. The structure itself is quite impressive but it wasn’t as nice inside since it was still bare brick. I know this was a conscious decision to leave the bricks exposed but it lost a bit of the magic when they decided to leave it like that. What is interesting with the Konstantinbasilika is that it has always been part of a larger structure. Even from the outside, I can see that the basilica has another structure attached to it which makes it unique when it comes to basilicas.
I was actually working my way from the back to the front of the basilica. I realized upon getting out of the church that there was more to see here. By going around, I realized that this was the front all along. There is a palace like structure here called the Electoral Palace which is attached to the basilica structure. Over the years, the basilica has been incorporated into the various structures which were built here. As the name would imply this would be the residence of the archbishops and electors of Trier. Remember that Trier was an imperial city and home to one of the electors of the Holy Roman Empire. An Electoral Palace is a fitting home for someone that important.
