I managed to take a local city bus in Trier to get back to the city center. It was freezing cold and I didn’t want to be walking the whole time. The driver kindly pointed me to where I needed to go. I asked for the basilica and I was told to just cross the street and keep going. I didn’t really know what I was looking for but it soon became obvious what it was. There is large brick structure that looks like a church. This church goes by a few names – Konstantinbasilika, Aura Palatina and Basilica of Constantine. And yes, it is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Trier.
As the name implies, the church is one built during the reign of emperor Constantine. It is a massive building that is made of brick. This thought this was a unique material to use for churches. I have seen brick churches but they are not common. The building we see today looks too good to be able to tell it’s age of almost two thousand years old. As you might expect, the building has seen several remodelings and even survived two world wars. Despite what you may think, the basilica was never a standalone structure. Sometimes it was even incorporated into a palace, only for it to be reverted back to its original form centuries later.
