The Trier Amphitheater was a place of entertainment in Roman Trier. There were gladatorial combats here as well as other forms of entertainment. Amphitheaters are actually quite common in the Roman empire, especially in cities which have large populations. Trier was an imperial city and thus it deserved an amphitheater of its own. The Trier Amphitheater is the tenth largest Roman amphitheater still intact. I followed a flight of stairs which brought be below the amphitheater. I didn’t think there would have been such a place here considering that there was a large structure right above it.
There are cellars under the amphitheater and it seems that they have been here for a while now. It took some time for my eyes to adjust to the darkness but there was also artificial lights to help visitors see. At the time of my visit, the cellar was waterlogged but there are walkways which are slightly elevated so visitors won’t be getting their feet wet. The ceiling is reinforced by wooden beams but apart from that there was little to see here. Apparently, this was where they kept the animals which are used in the shows. At one time, it also served as some sort of prison. These days, there is little to tell the visitor what used to be here apart from the signs scattered along the path.
