The amphitheater is the latest of the ancient Roman monuments that are in the city of Trier. Like a lot of other amphitheaters in the region, this one was used for entertainment and yes, they even had gladiatorial combat here. A lot of times these events are sponsored by someone to gain favor with the people. Like modern day sports, there are also merchandise sold related to these events. It is really amazing to know how similar these events are to what we have now. I entered the amphitheater from the main entrance and what I immediately noticed was that there were no seats. I don’t know if this was the original design. There were green slopes where the seats would have been. Perhaps they were all sitting on the grass when they watch events here.
Walking along the main arena of the amphitheater, I noticed that there is a flight of stairs seemingly in the middle of nowhere. There was not sign here apart from entrance. The stairs goes underground which made me wonder what would possibly be below an amphitheater. Because it was winter, there weren’t a lot of visitors here at the amphitheater so I was having doubts as to whether this place is actually part of the visit, but I went in anyway.
