As I was walking to the Porta Nigra in the city of Trier, I noticed that the buildings I’m seeing seem to be very nice. There was an air of elegance to the buildings as I was walking. I have never heard of the city of Trier before coming here but it seems that it was a very important city back in the day. The city has a history going back more than two thousand years. It used to be one of the seats of the electors of the Holy Roman Empire. As you can imagine, you are allowed to elect the next emperor, you much be a very important person. I always thought that the emperor was a position that was just passed down from father to son but it seems that this wasn’t always the case.
Because of the importance of Trier, there were several Roman monuments that were built all over the city. The Porta Nigra is was one of them and I want to be able to see the rest. I went through Porta Nigra which used to be one of the city gates and I was making my way to the city center. This area seems to be a pedestrian area and there were numerous shops here as you might expect. This is much livelier compared to where I was yesterday and I thought it was a good change of pace. I took time to purchase a pair of gloves since it was really freezing that day. I can’t afford to just stay in the hotel just because it is cold. Besides, I am in the middle of changing hotels so I still needed to go out anyway.
