One of the most famous landmarks here in Sankt Goarhausen is Loreley Rock. This is actually a rocky hill along a bend of the Rhine. The bend is quite narrow at this point and it may look taller than it really is. Loreley Rock is named for the character Loreley who tragically jumped to her death from this rock. As you might expect, this rock is also a good viewing area for the Rhine. It is actually very near where the statue of Loreley is and it is worth a visit if you area already in the area. There is a marked path which lets visitors go up to the top of the Loreley Rock.
I realized that I totally didn’t anticipate this Loreley Rock. I spent most of the day exploring the area and only discovering this place when I visited the statue of Loreley. I would have wanted to climb up to the top of Loreley Rock but I don’t have much time to spare. I can see that the sun was going down quickly and so is the temperature. I don’t know how long it would take me to get to the top but seeing that it isn’t that tall anyway, I wouldn’t expect that it would have taken that much time. However, getting home early is more important to me. I already have photos of the Rhine from Burg Katz and I imagine that the view from Loreley Rock would be more of the same. But if you have time to spare here I think Loreley Rock would be the best place to appreciate the view of the Rhine. Just make sure not to jump.
