I was disappointed yet again in my attempted visit to a castle here in the Rhine region. Both Burg Rheinfels and Burg Katz were not open to visitors. Rhinefels wasn’t open for the season but Katz wasn’t open to visitors at all because it is private property. This is a shame since Burg Katz seems to be quite impressive at least from the outside. Between the two it seems that Burg Katz is the better maintained one. There isn’t much to do here since I have basically reached a dead end. I decided to head back down the hill where Butz Katz is. I can see that there are also opportunities for hiking here since the trail I followed seems to go on up the hill. I don’t think I have time to do that since I think there is still something else to see here.
The trail also branches down the hill, which is a separate trail from what I took to get here. This trail hugs the hill more closely and thus it is steeper. There are steps here for the convenience of walkers but in the winter some of these steps can get a little slippery so best to watch your step. Along the way, there is yet another spot which is associated with the painter Joseph Mallord William Turner, who was here to do some painting. It looks like he picked a very good spot too. You get a great view of the Rhine as it makes its way northward. I can see why the builders of Burg Katz chose this spot.
