When I first arrived here at Sankt Goar/Goarhausen, the first major landmark which caught my eye was the Rhine of course. Apart from the river, the next one which I noticed was this castle perched on top of a hill behind the town in the opposite bank. That town is Sankt Goarhausen and the castle is Burg Katz. It is hard not to notice the castle since it was so prominent. Sankt Goar itself has its own Burg Rheinfels but Rheinfels isn’t as well preserved as Burg Katz seems to be. When I first arrived, I was at Sankt Goar then I took the ferry to cross the Rhine and visit the town of Sankt Goarhausen.
Signs to Burg Katz weren’t plentiful, which I thought was strange since it is a major landmark here in the town. I had to use Google Maps to look for the way to the castle. I followed the road going up the hill and followed a dirt path branching out from it to reach the castle. It wasn’t a long walk but it ulimately ended in disappointment again. The red front gate of the castle is closed and there is a sign which says that it is private property. This was not good. I thought that I would at least get to see the castle up close even if I couldn’t go in but there doesn’t seem to be any way around it, which is a shame.
