The town of Sankt Goarhausen is the one directly across Sankt Goar across the Rhine. Both towns are located within the UNESCO World Heritage site listed Rhine Gorge, which is a very picturesque section of the historic Rhine. I was hoping to see some interesting places here in town but it seems that a lot of shops here are closed. I am no longer surprised by this and I have come to expect this as the norm during this time of the year. I decided to then see if I can visit the castle that soars above the town – Burg Katz. Burg Katz seems to be a much better maintained compared to the Rheinfels castle across the river.
As you might expect, there is no public transport here and to get to Burg Katz from the town, one would have to hike up the hill behind the town. Google Maps will be able to help you reach the town but I took a little more roundabout way of getting there by following the road which forms a junction with the main road up the hill. This is the one where the round tower is. There is a dirt path along the hill which is marked by a barrier, hopefully only to keep cars out. I went past the barrier and continued the hike. There wasn’t a single person on the way up and I was glad that it was still bright outside. The path is strewn with leaves and you would think that not a lot of people actually make it here.
