As I was walking along the banks of the Rhine, I noticed that there is another town just across Sankt Goar. This is the town of Sankt Goarhausen. The name is too similar to Sankt Goar that I was confused as to whether there was a just a typo in the names but they are really two distinct towns which also happen to be built right across each other. I do not know if there is a story behind the names but I’m sure that I wasn’t the only one who got confused with this. There is no bridge or tunnel which connects the two towns, instead there is a short ferry crossing which carries foot traffic as well as vehicular traffic across the river.
The ferry shuttles back and forth across the river as long as there are no ships in the way. The ferry docks at the terminal and vehicles would roll out of the ship and incoming ones would drive their way in. Foot traffic like me, would just walk up the ferry. There is staff on board who will collect a minimal fee for the use of the ferry. I can see that there are hardly any seats on this ferry, since there is hardly any need to sit down because of the short time needed to cross the river. I thought this is a fun activity and at least I would get to see Sankt Goarhausen.
