I was walking along the banks of the Rhine at Sankt Goar. It was a frosty morning but it was getting a little better with the sun rising. I can see that the skies are clear and it would be great for taking photos. I also noticed that there is a town on the opposite side of the river. I knew of the town since I was doing research on how to get here from Köln. The train I took passes through Sankt Goar. The town opposite Sankt Goar also has a train line going past it so that might also have been an option. As I was walking, I wondered about how to get to the other side of the river. There didn’t seem to be a bridge nearby so getting to the other side was a mystery to me.
I then saw that there is a ferry station nearby. The ferry that crosses the river frequently that it is the primary way of crossing the river. There might be bridges or tunnels that cross the river but at least for Sankt Goar, you will need the ferry to get to the opposite side. The ferry also takes vehicles, even trucks. So you can see how critical this piece of infrastructure is. It is interesting that they operate a ferry crossing here considering how busy the river traffic here is. I guess you just need to time the crossing when there are no passing ships.
