Rheinfels Castle is probably the most significant landmark here in the idyllic town of Sankt Goar. The castle is built on top of a hill and it is considered to be the largest castle overlooking the Rhine. It also used to be the largest fortress in the region until the ruins were cannibalized for other purposes. Although it isn’t as big as it used to be there are still plenty of parts which are still intact. I can’t really tell what these structures are apart from it being part of a castle. The entrance to the castle is at the far end of the path, close to the overlook.
Unfortunately for me, the castle doesn’t seem to be open to visitors. This is getting to be a recurring theme here in my visit to Germany. It doesn’t seem like a lot of places are open during the winter and I think this applies more to the smaller towns. The window where the ticket kiosk would be was closed as well as the main gate to the castle. There were, however, some workers who managed to get in. I think they were there for maintenance purposes. I was thinking of asking them if I can go in with them but I reconsidered. I only managed to take photos from where the hotel and restaurant is.
