It was still early morning at the small town of Sankt Goar in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Actually the sun has already risen but because the town is surrounded my mountains, you won’t get to see the sun until much later. From the looks of it, it will be a beautiful but frosty day. Shops are still closed so I was looking for things to do here. I have already taken photos of the Rhine and the surrounding valley but I would like to come back to it when it is brighter.
In the meantime, I was looking around and I noticed that there are some castles visible from here. Three in fact, there is one across the town on a hill. There is another further upstream. And there is another just behind Sankt Goar also on top of a hill. It was actually very prominent that it is impossible to miss. I decided to try to visit the castle, perhaps the light would be a little better there while I wait for the valley to be illuminated by the sun. There are signs here pointing to Rheinfels Castle which is one of the most imporant landmarks of Sankt Goar. Just looking at the castle was making me lose interest because it seems to be so high up and I don’t really fancy walking up a hill. I don’t really have a choice because the promised shuttle bus at the train station is nowhere to be found. I can see that there is a road going up to the castle, hopefully it won’t be a long trek.
