I arrived early in the morning in the town of Sankt Goar. It is was below freezing that morning and nothing here seems to be open at least to help me warm up. I did have a winter jacket on but it is just enough to keep the cold out. I was lucky that there isn’t any wind that time or it would have been worse. I can see that there is some frost on the ground and that some parts of the ground can be slippery. Sankt Goar is a small town on the banks of the River Rhine. The Rhine as you know is one of the great rivers of the world and it is especially important here in Europe particularly to Germany where a lot of important cities where built. Sankt Goar is no city, but it is situated at one of the most picturesque sections of the Rhine.

The Rhine cut a gorge or valley along this area which created a very beautiful landscape. It is because of this beauty that inspired artists of all sorts. What might not be immediately visible here is the presence of several castles whose owner undoubtedly want to partake of the beauty of the Rhine Valley. Much of these castles are now in ruins but the towns remain. This area of the Rhine has been inhabited for centuries. The name of the town comes form Goar of Aquitane who lived here to be a hermit. Eventually upon his death a church was built where he once lived and eventually formed the town of Sankt Goar.
