One of the main reasons to visit the town of Brühl is their UNESCO World Heritage site of Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl. It is composed of Falkenlust which is a hunting lodge and Augustusuburg Palace itself. As far a palaces go, this one seems to be on the small side, when compared to more well known palaces such as Versailles but I can see a bit of similarity here. The palace itself was built by Clemens August, for whom the palace was named.
It seems that this Clemens August was also quite the personality. He was Archbishop of Bavaria, this also gave him a position of an elector, which helps in the selection of the next emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. However, much as he was Archbishop, it seems he also is a person who has a lot of worldly desires. As part of this, he ordered the construction of the palace in Brühl as well as a hunting lodge nearby. You can see he was more into these kinds of things rather than governing. I guess this kind of thing is also common back then, although you could argue that it now is not as egregious as it was back then. However, if you think about it, if it weren’t for people like Clemens August, we wouldn’t have grand monuments like the Augustusburg Palace to visit today.
