Not too far away from the city of Köln, is the town of Brühl which is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site under the title Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl. As the name implies, there are two sites. Falkenlust is a hunting lodge, which is actually a small mansion for us normal people. I have visited the hunting lodge earlier even if it was not open to visitors. I merely took photos of it and proceeded to go to the Augustusburg Palace. I already saw the Augustusburg Palace as I got out of the train station but I thought that I should go to Falkenlust first since it was further. With that out of the way, I was free to spend what’s left of the day at Augustusburg.
I had no illusions anymore of being able to enter the palace. It didn’t seem like it was open when I first arrived, so I didn’t see any point to hurry to see it just as I arrived. Now that I have finished visiting Falkenlust, I don’t have to worry about it getting dark in a remote area which I have never been too. Anyway, back to Augustusburg Palace. This feels a bit like a smaller version of the Palace of Versailles. There is the palace and of course there is the sprawling garden. The garden isn’t exactly at it’s best right now. It was winter and there wasn’t a lot of greenery. Even the ponds at the palace grounds weren’t that great since the temperature was almost freezing, the water was about to freeze as well. Obviously, this place would be great to see in warmer months but I don’t have the luxury of just going to Germany any time I want to. This will have to do.
