I chose to come to Aachen Cathedral, because I know it is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. I didn’t really read much into the history of the place and I only came to know more when I got here. Aachen was Charlemagne’s capital city when he was emperor. Like any other emperor Charlemagne set out to build a cathedral, actually it was just a chapel for him. The current cathedral that we see now is a result of centuries worth of adding more structures to the chapel. It is interesting to know that these structures would grow over time. The now Aachen Cathedral is one of the most important landmarks of the city of Aachen.
Upon finally entering Aachen Cathedral, I was surprised to see the interior of the cathedral. In contrast to the layout of churches that I was used to. The Aachen Cathedral centers around the central dome which rises above the church grounds. The cathedral this calls to mind the form of the crown which forms the imperial regalia. I guess it is normal to design churches like these. The dome is decorated with images of various figures all of whom I don’t recognize. However, you can see how this church feels a lot older than the other churches I have been to. Indeed, this church has its roots from year 805. In fact, it is one of the oldest cathedrals in Europe.
