The German city of Aachen has a very compact city center which makes it very convenient to explore most of its major landmarks. A lot of the landmarks are very close to the cathedral and since I was waiting for the cathedral to open it’s doors, I have some time to see the rest of Aachen. It is not uncommon to see religious and civilian structures be built very close to each other. Back then, the political leaders would be very close to the church and vice versa. The city of Aachen is not different in this regard. The city hall of Aachen is actually just opposite the plaza where the cathedral is.
Back then there was an actual palace for Charlemagne, however it fell into ruins over the years and eventually the remains were incorporated into the new city hall of Aachen. I have to say that the city hall looks a lot like a palace. There are the typical pointed towers which are commonly depicted in fairy tale castles. It was Christmas when I visited and there was a large figure of what I think is a gingerbread man. I think the gingerbread is actually something related to Aachen but I’d rather that it not be there. Hopefully, this would be open to visitors.
