I was quite disappointed that the Aachen Cathedral was still not open for visits. It was already past nine in the morning and I would have expected it to be open by this time. There were also several people waiting outside the cathedral doors also puzzled that it was still not open. I don’t speak their language but I think the look on their faces speaks volumes. It seems that it only opens at eleven in the morning so I can go elsewhere and have a look at other places here in Aachen. Since I was already at the city center, I didn’t really have to go far to find one.

I was going around the cathedral just to have a look at the exterior of the building when I saw that there was a smaller church just a stone’s throw away from the cathedral. I thought it was weird to have another church so near the cathedral. This church is Saint Foilan Church in Aachen. Saint Foilan is a rather strange saint’s name to see in Germany. Saint Foilan is an Irish saint. To find his name here in Germany would be out of place. This will indicate that the church was established by missionaries from Western Europe, possibly Ireland or Britain or at least what they used to be back then.
