I didn’t have a plan in mind when walking around in the city of Köln or Cologne in Germany. I thought that I won’t really have much time to run around so I just try to explore the city center or at least the immediate area near the Köln Cathedral. I also made a mental note of some interesting structures which I saw as the train was pulling over into the Köln central train station. One of the structures that I saw was the Old Köln Town Hall.
You would not be wrong to think that old Köln center would be near the current cathedral. I would think of it as Old Köln. Unsurprisingly there are a lot of old structures here but you can’t help but think that there should be more considering the history of the city. A lot of structures were destroyed in the war and even the cathedral was heavily damaged. Over the years, the structures were eventually restored and one of these is the Old Köln Town Hall. There is a prominent tower here which is considered Köln first skyscraper. I know calling it a skyscraper would be a stretch but it is quite tall and I think back in the day, it would indeed be considered a skyscraper. The tower is actually part of the town hall complex which unfortunately still being restored. The tower itself is adorned by numerous statues which make it a very distinctive landmark in Köln.
