I was finally finished with my Christmas market lunch. It wasn’t really much of a lunch since it was just currywurst and bread. I would have considered that a snack, but I thought to not over eat now so I can eat a bit more for dinner. The Köln Cathedral is in the center of the city and very close to my hotel and the train station. It is a major landmark in the city and you can see how important it is with a lot of people visiting the cathedral. The UNESCO World Heritage listed cathedral is the second tallest in Germany and it also happens to be the third tallest in the world.
Looking at the gothic Köln Cathedral, the spires didn’t seem to be abnormally tall but I think it is because the entire structure is tall to begin with. By adding spires to an already tall structure you would end up with a very tall church. Like a lot of gothic churches, the design of the church is very elaborate. Going inside you can see the signature tall columns which support the church. This is meant to convey the majesty of God and I think it works. Looking up, you can see the beautiful stained glass windows. Unfortunately, it was a gloomy day so there won’t be any sunlight coming through those windows.
