I finally was on a trip on my own and I think it is nice to have control over my schedule once again. I know it can be good to have friends to go with but that would come with compromises one would have to accept. This time, there won’t be any compromises since I will be totally on my own. I didn’t make any major plans for the trip yet. All I know is that I will be staying in this and that city on this and that day. Apart from that, I will play everything by ear and see where I would end up. I think I can afford to do this since I won’t be inconveniencing anyone in case my plans change.
I arrived in Germany through the Düsseldorf International Airport. As you would expect, the airport was huge and modern. Not that I don’t find Düsseldorf interesting, but I need to leave Düsseldorf and head to the nearby city of Cologne where I would be basing myself for a few days. Düsseldorf, like any other major German city, has excellent connections to the rest of Germany. Fortunately for me, there is a train that leaves the airport and goes directly to Cologne.
Düsseldorf International Airport is so large that there is a train that brings passengers to its different terminals. This is obviously very convenient because there won’t be as much walking just to get to a different terminal, this is particularly true when you have a lot of baggage with you. I got the sky train to Terminal C where passengers get transfer to the train line which goes to Cologne. I had to struggle a lot with the automated ticket kiosks to purchase a ticket to Cologne. For some reason, it won’t let me pay by contactless which annoyed me no end. Fortunately, there are actual ticket counters at the station with real people and I managed to get a ticket.
