Caverns at Algarve

Cavern at Algarve

I was very impressed with the rugged coastline of the Algarve region in Portugal. It is a bit different from the ones that I have seen in Ireland, which also has very impressive cliffs but the rocks here in Portugal have a yellowish color which give the cliffs a very different character. It helps that the day is very bright as it just highlights the color of these features. The constant crashing of the waves here in the coast has given birth to these features. In fact, all of them can be attributed to steady erosion caused by the waves.

The bottoms of the cliffs would be steadily erroded until sometimes it will just hollow out giving birth to a cavern. If the roof is low enough sometimes there would even be a hole in the carven roof which gives it a sky light. This seems to be a common feature here in this area, perhaps the rock here is more easily eroded and yet strong enough to maintain its structure. I find these features very interesting since it gives a bit of wonder to the experience of exploring a cavern.
