I joined a tour group to Antelope Slot Canyon which isn’t that far away from the town of Page. There were a lot of people from other groups who entered the canyon but we all entered in groups which helps to moderate the flow of people. However, you still have to be conscious of people in front of your as well as behind you. You can’t afford to be too slow to move forward else people would be overtaking you and stand in front of your photo. For me, I thought it was best for me to keep lagging behind our group so that I was just in front of the next group. This helps me avoid people in my photos. I know that we were advised to bring hats but I already had one and I had been wearing one ever since I came to Arizona because it was that hot.
The hat however serves another purpose. It was summer so I wasn’t expecting any rain. We were also inside the canyon so I wasn’t expecting any sun apart form the time we will go in and go out of the canyon. It turns out there is a different kind of rain here – sand. I didn’t realize this but sand would also blow from above an into the canyon below where we were. Each time I would look up to try to take a photo of something sand would rain down and you know that it is not a pleasant experience. This is where the hat comes in handy. I recalled how our tour guide has all this desert attire going on, completed with head cover. I realized that it was meant precisely for this. This way you avoid getting sand in your hair. You wear glasses so you don’t get sand in your eyes. I guess that he has done this so much that he already knows what to expect. It would be best to learn from him.
