I booked a tour with Antelope Slot Canyon Tours to visit the Antelope Slot Canyon. It seems that this place is quite well known even though I didn’t know its name. I have seen photos of the place in various places even in Windows wallpapers. The slot canyon is in Navajo land and it is required that everyone go in there as part of a tour group. At the time of my visit, the Navajo Nation is still under COVID restrictions so you need to wear a mask when you go there. I thought that it was strange since it is outdoor but it is their land after all so you need to follow their rules.
I got a mid-day slot to visit the canyon. I am hoping that the sun would be shining through the canyon to give me the photos that I was looking for. I reasoned that if I go too late, the sun would be too low in the sky to illuminate the slot canyon. Either way, it seems that they already planned everything since there aren’t too many slots available. There is a bus which brings visitors from the meeting point to the entrance of the slot canyon. Bags are also restricted to a certain size and if you insist on bringing a bag, it would need to be transparent. My understanding is that this is to deter theft of any artifacts that people might find.
There were several buses which were leaving and we were on some sort of race in the desert to see who can get there first. It was almost like those Mad Max scenes with a lot of vehicles racing in the desert. Each driver has their own preferred path. I don’t know which one is better but we didn’t end up getting there first. The parking area was packed with buses and I only realized how many people would be going in. Groups would be taking turns going in so I think it would be best if you go last that way you don’t need to rush.
