I was exploring the area around the Glen Canyon Dam and it turns out that there is a place which looks over the entire area. Wahweap Overlook is further down the road from the Glen Canyon Dam on the way out to Utah. On the way, you will pass by the entrance to the Wahweap Recreational Area. Although I didn’t go in, I can tell that is a place to explore the area past the Glen Canyon Dam. Looking at the map, I can see that Lake Powell is much larger than I thought it is. Lake Powell is the lake that was formed when Glen Canyon Dam was completed. It goes further upstream and way into the state of Utah. In fact, more of the lake is in Utah than in Arizona.
There is a rather nondescript sign which points the way to the lookout point. There isn’t really any other way to go but up and you soon arrive at a flat area which is the overlook. There is a small shed here which helps keep the sun out but you would actually want to be out in the sun to see the view. The overlook is high enough to see Lake Powell and parts of the Colorado River. You can even see the Glen Canyon Dam as well as the bridge from here so you know where exactly you are. What was surprising to me was that Lake Powell hosts a marina. It is almost unbelievable that there is a marina here in the middle of the desert. I guess it is proof of the resilience of humans against such an inhospitable environment.
