The Glen Canyon Dam is one of the most prominent landmarks here in the town of Page in Arizona. Page was literally born out of the need to have a place for workers to stay while building the Glen Canyon Dam, so the two’s histories are inseparable. The Glen Canyon Dam is one of several dams which hold back the Colorado River. It produces power for the region and it also provides water through Lake Powell which is the reservoir which was formed when the Glen Canyon Dam was completed. These days Lake Powell is now a recreational area and it is one of the main places to visit here in Page.
I went to the Glen Canyon Dam hoping to get a closer look at the dam. It is certainly very impressive. The Glen Canyon Bridge crosses the canyon below but it also gives you a very good look at the dam. To the left of the dam, there is also a visitor center. There is usually one which educates visitors about the history of the dam. More importantly for me, the visitor center is indoors, which meant it was air-conditioned. It is only mid morning that heat was becoming almost unbearable. Of course, I exaggerate a bit since I was already a bit accustomed to the extreme heat here but really it is already getting very warm. The Carl Hayden Visitor Center is the place to go to to know more about the Glen Canyon Dam.
