It is well known that much of modern American history started in the East Coast, when the first Europeans settled there. Over the years, there was a push to open up the western United States. It was a vast country and people need to be able to see it. Back then, there wasn’t anything like airports which make travel very easy. When people discover beautiful places, the infrastructure needs to be built to make sure any visitors would be comfortable. This is the same with the Grand Canyon, the Americans were in awe of these massive canyon in the desert but getting there is a challenge.

Over the years the South Rim was developed and it sprang hotels and other facilities. The North Rim wasn’t as well developed as the south and it didn’t have as much facilities. However, there is one prominent hotel here which was built in the North Rim – the Grand Canyon Lodge. This lodge was completed in 1928 and serves a lot of the tourist traffic of the North Rim. These days, there are still not a lot of options in the North Rim. I thought it would have been nice to stay here but it would not have been cheap. When I arrived, the restaurant of the lodge was just opening and there was a queue to get in. When I got in, I realize how it would be nice to have lunch here but there were too many people in line and I just gave up.

The walls of the lodge facing the canyon are glass and you get an amazing view of the Grand Canyon. I think you might forget to eat once you sit here. I was pleasantly surprised to see that any visitor can just come here to the lodge and have a look. Of course, residents area would be off limits but at least you get to go to the viewing area. Given how the outside temperature has started to go up, I think it would be nice to just hang around in the viewing area.
