Boston has a lot of history behind it. One could say that the beginnings of American independence was here in Boston. There is a lot of that type of history here. But there is also a more recent type of history, nothing to do with politics. At the time of my visit, it just happened to be the NBA finals. While I would not consider myself a huge fan, I do follow the news and I would at least know that the NBA Playoffs have already started and which teams are playing. Boston happens to be one of the teams who is in the NBA Finals, with the Golden State Warriors being the other.
Naturally, the entire city of Boston is excited about this, I’m no fan of the Boston Celtics, in fact, I like the other team. However, I know that the home of the Boston Celtics, the Boston Garden, now known as the TD Garden is considered a historic arena having been the site of numerous well known games, including the ones when the Celtics were very dominant in the 1950s and 1960s. I had no illusions of being able to afford a ticket to watch a finals game so I would just go there to the stadium and see this historic building for myself.
What I wasn’t expecting was that what I would be visiting is the new Boston Garden. Over the years, the original Boston Garden deteriorated until finally it was decided to be torn down. The site right next to the stadium was chosen for the new stadium while the old site was turned into a commercial development. I wouldn’t have been any wiser since by the time I visited, everything was all done. What stands here is a large modern stadium with numerous commercial establishments. It sits right on top of North Station which makes it convenient for spectators. I wasn’t able to actually see the court but I still managed to go in and have a look around. Outside you can see posters of the first five of the current Boston Celtics. I actually ended up going to a bar to watch the first two quarters of the game but I was too tired from jet lag to keep watching.
