Sacred Heart Italian Church in Boston

Whenever I think of Boston, I would always think that Boston would always equate to Ireland. True, there is a large part of the population that originated from Ireland. You can easily tell just by walking around the city, there would be numerous Irish Pubs here that you would think that you were actually in Dublin. It is also not surprising that Boston is also called the most European city in the United States. I probably would agree that there is a lot of European flavor here. Apparently, it is not just because of the Irish. It was probably too naive of me to think that there would only be Irish here.

Procession at Little Italy

Procession at Little Italy

Apparently, there is a large section of Boston which is associated with the Italians. They even call it little Italy. As you might expect, there are Italian restaurants all over the place but I wasn’t expecting just how deep these roots run. I was walking through little Italy and I happened to hear some music playing. It sounds like it is band music and I am talking about marching band type of band. I was surprised to see that there was a procession that was going on. It was causing a bit of traffic but I don’t think there were going very far. At the front of the procession was the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is not uncommon in Catholic communities to have a procession in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I wasn’t sure which statue it was but it seems that the feast day of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is approaching.

Anyway, the procession came to a halt in front of the Sacred Heart Italian church. Indeed, the proceedings were all in Italian and I couldn’t understand anything. I have been to enough processions that I knew roughly what is happening. I didn’t hang on until the end of the procession. I just took my photos and continued on my way.
