Catacombs of the Pantheon in Paris

Catacombs at the Pantheon in Paris

For all intents and purposes, the Pantheon is just a repurposed church. Much of the design of what would have been a church was just kept but instead turned into a mausoleum. The interiors of the Pantheon are very Romanesque especially with the arches that are very typical of this architectural style. Knowing nothing about the French revolution didn’t help me understand the importance of this place. I decided to hurry up to the next section. As it turns out there is a second level to the Pantheon and it goes down.

Much like a real cathedral or basilica back in the day, there would usually be a basement which would serve as catacombs for important figures. In the church, these would normally be cardinals, popes and even royalty especially if they were close to the church. However, the Pantheon is not a church, it is a monument to the heroes of the French revolution. This area is where the heroes of the revolution are laid to rest. I know I would see a lot of names here would I would not recognize but I think it is interesting to look around this place anyway.
