I didn’t really have a destination in mind when I was walking around Paris. It was the final day of my trip and I just wanted to take it easy. I started at the Île de la Cité which is an island on the River Seine. It has several important buildings here and I just continued from there. I didn’t really need to walk that far to run into another monument since there are that many along the river. Paris turns out to be quite a pleasant city to visit, contrary to my first impression. Perhaps it is also due to the ongoing pandemic that there didn’t seem to be that many people out and about.
Eventually, I ran into yet another monument. This one appears to be a gothic tower of some sort. This is Tour Saint-Jacques. The more I look at it, the more that it looks like it is a part of a church. Turns out, that it actually was part of a church. There used to be a church dedicated to Saint-Jacques or Saint James. The church was razed during the French revolution and somehow only the tower remained. It does look odd now that there is only the tower left but I am glad that it is still standing. I don’t think the church would be rebuilt anymore but it still serves as a nice monument. Additionally, this is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site entitled Routes of Santiago de Compostela, which is a pilgrimage route that includes parts of northern Spain and France. Tour Saint-Jacques is one of the stops along this route.
