If you ask me about a Paris landmark, I would immediately say the Eiffel Tower, or maybe the Arc de Triomphe. I wasn’t only until recently that I came to know about the Sacre Coeur Basilica. It is a white basilica that is built on top of Montmartre which overlooks the city of Paris. I don’t know why I only knew about this church recently. Perhaps it is not as easy to get to compared to the others. Yes, but I think it is just as deserving as the other landmarks. The Sacre Coeur Basilica is one of two churches that are built on the hill. Undoubtedly, this is the more famous one. The other one is right beside it, so there is no missing either one of them.
As far as basilicas are concerned, the Sacre Coeur Basilica is relatively young having been built in 1919. Additionally, the design of the church is very different from the other churches which I have visited in this trip. It seems to be a mixture of multiple styles, with Romanesque being one of the obvious ones with the columns and arches that are typical of this style. However, the towers were very different from what I have seen. The towers are topped by domes which are narrower that normal. The basilica has several of these domes and together they give the church a narrower and taller appearance. This unique combination of styles gives the Sacre Coeur Basilica a very unique look which distinguishes it from the other landmarks in Paris.
