I was walking up the hill to visit the Sacre Coeur Basilica in Paris. It is on top of a hill and although there are non manual ways of going up the hill, I chose to walk. The walk wasn’t a long one anyway. I like that you can stop and have a look around the area when I do get tired. Eventually I reached what I thought was the top at the Place de Tertre. It was a nice little square on top of the hill where painters would gather and customers would pay to paint portraits of them. I didn’t bother with that I was after the church here. I saw a church and thought it was smaller than I imagined it to be but no matter. This was the Saint-Pierre de Montmartre.
The Saint-Pierre de Montmartre is one of the oldest churches in Paris. It is located at the top of Montmartre, the hill overlooking Paris. I can’t tell but it seems that it was built in the 12th century. It is certainly much older than it looks. Of course, a church can’t survive that long without any reconstruction and that is how it got its current look. There used to be an abbey here at the Montemartre. This church served as the the church of that abbey. Back then it was a very well known abbey which probably justifies its location above Paris.
