In a city like Strasbourg, you would be spoilt for choice when it come to food. I have come to appreciate French food much better than the first time I visited France. What I am learning is that there also regional specialties when it comes to local cuisine. The region of Alsace, where Strasbourg is, is one of these places which have a local cuisine. Probably in contrast to the rest of France, the cuisine of Alsace is rather simple. True enough, I have sampled some of the Alsatian cuisine and I think you can even make it yourself because the ingredients are really that common.
In my final night at Strasbourg, I ended up going to this Restaurant Gurtlerhoft. The name definitely sounds German but this is a French place. Naturally, they also serve local Alsatian specialties. Unfortunately, I was actually still full from lunch at Colmar because it was quite heavy with all those potatoes. I ended up having flammekueche which is similar to pizza but with Alsatian ingredients. The restaurant is actually underground. It looks like it is built out of a cellar and it is very pretty. Some of the steps can be a little tricky though, it was so bad that they have to station someone permanently at one specific spot to warn people of the steps. It won’t be good to have your guests accidentally tripping. I wish they would just fix it. The flammekueche was lovely as usual. I had it the first day I arrived in Strasbourg, I thought that this is a regional specialty and I don’t think I can easily find it in other parts of France.
