Once you have been to a Christmas market, you never get tired of them. Growing up, I have been to Christmas carnivals and they were basically more like a seasonal themepark than a Christmas market. I first visited an actual Christmas market in Belfast and I was thrilled by it. It was festive, it was crowded and it was very Christmas-y. There were a lot of food stalls, naturally, but there were also stalls which sells handicraft. Usually from the local area. When I found out that Strasbourg has this famous Christmas Market, and that I would be visiting in December, I was determined to go there.
It wasn’t difficult to find the Christmas Market in Strasbourg. In fact, there are several of them scattered across the city. This is good because you do not want the whole city to be all in one place. It would have been a huge logistical nightmare. There are several markets in the city usually set up where there are squares. So church squares would be common places to have it. Strasbourg also has a main square which unsurprisingly, was also turned into a Christmas market. At that time, it was pandemic and there were protocols in place. You need to present your digital certificate to prove you have been vaccinated and then you are free to go.
You will be spoilt for choice in the Christmas markets. I don’t really know if there are any famous stalls here but I just follow the crowd. If there seems to be a long queue somewhere the maybe it is a good place. However, a lot of the markets sell pretty much the same snacks. It is just convenient to have a lot of them in one place. There is a separate eating area so you don’t make the market itself sticky from the food. I appreciate that because it makes the place nice, clean and comfortable to walk in. Naturally, there is a massive Christmas tree here just to complete the Christmas market.
