Thoughts on La Petite Venise

Narrow Alleys at Colmar

Narrow Alleys at Colmar

The moment that I saw that poster of a medieval village with a canal running through it, I was convinced that I needed to find it. I originally thought that the poster was that of Petite France in Strasbourg but closer examination of the photo told me that it wasn’t the same. Although there was a canal running through the center, there buildings were all different. Then I noticed that there was a caption in the photo and it says La Petite Venise. This is not the same place as Petite France, I think. A quick Google told me that La Petite Venise is in the neighboring city of Colmar.

Colmar turned out to be as beautiful as I had hoped. There were a lot of timber framed houses that were wonderfully preserved. With the same design that seems to pervade the entire city, Colmar is like a city frozen in time. La Petite Venise is probably the heart of all this. A canal does run right through a narrow cluster of houses producing that signature photo that has made it famous the world over. I didn’t get the best weather when I was there. In fact, it was drizzling a bit but at least it was good enough to take photos of this beautiful place. By this time, there were significantly a lot more people. I was lucky that I got a chance to see it before everybody came.
