The modest church that is beside the Palace of the Dukes of Lorraine has been turned into a museum. Back then the Church of Saint Francis of the Cordeliers was patronized by the dukes of Lorraine who live next door. I was lucky that the church was open for visitors despite it not appearing to be open. Maybe because it was winter and they can’t have to doors open all the time. Anyway, I managed to get a get a look at the artifacts that are on display here. There more than a few tombs which are on display here. The dukes intended for this church to host their remains.
There are a few sarcophagi which are on display here. They are quite prominent with a cover which has a sculpture of what the deceased looked like. I wonder if they ever had a say on how they would want these sculptures to look like. I would rather strange to be planning for these things. Just past the altar is the choir area. I don’t think the church is used for services anymore as it functions primarily as a museum. To the left of the altar is a door which apparently leads to the crypt. Normally, the crypt would be on a level below the church but this one is just off to one side. There are several tombs of former dukes of Lorraine. I don’t really know these names but the crypt is a place of silence. The dome above it gives it the appearance that they are near God.
