I was glad to run into the Basilica of Saint Epvre. It is built in the old city of Nancy. Compared to the other churches that I have seen on this trip, the basilica of Saint Epvre is not as large. It is still a gothic church which means that it is still quite ornate. I think part of this is because compared to the other churches, this basilica was only recently built. The current structure that stands here was built in the 1870s. There were older structures here but they are long gone. I could not figure out how to get in as the doors seem to be locked.
Walking by the side of the basilica I can see that it has numerous stained glass windows. I’m sure that this would have been a very impressive sight to see had the church been open. The side of the church also looked a little dodgy in keeping with the general dodginess of the area. Looking at it from the side, it seems to be bigger than I thought. I thought that it was just built a little taller because it was just maximizing the land it was built on. However, humble this church looks it was received endowments from the emperors, kings and even popes. As for the name, it is named for Saint Epvre who was bishop of Toul back in the sixth century. Toul is a place near modern day Nancy.
