One of the main features of Place Stanislas is the Arc Héré, a triumphal arch dedicated to Stanislaus’ son-in-law who also happens to be king of France, Louis XV. The Arc Héré blends well with the rest of the buildings of the square. It helps that they are all roughly the same height. The arch then then acts like a gate that promises to bring you to someplace amazing. Such is the feel of the Arc Héré. It seems that at the time of my visit they were in the process of setting something up for Christmas. There are several vehicles parked right by the Arc Héré that it spoils the photo.
Walking through the Arc Héré, I was hoping to see something amazing just like what I have seen in Place Stanislas. What was here is yet another square – Place de la Carrière. In contast to Place Stanislas, this square is elongated. But like the former, it is still bounded on all sides by impressive buildings. The buildings here though look much more run down compared to the ones are Place Stanislas. I would imagine that these buildings are all government buildings but it seems that at least some of them are private. The difference in the maintenance of the buildings here are very different that I was quickly losing interest in the square. It was almost dodgy, fortunately, it was still morning so it wasn’t scary yet. The Place de la Carrière itself is just as sad. The trees the should be lining the square no longer have any leaves. No surprise here since it is already winter but a little more life here would be better appreciated. I don’t know if there is supposed to be a Christmas market here but it seems like this would be the perfect place for one.
